Morphological Studies on Hepatic Stem Cells

Abstract
The Customary wave of hepatocyte regeneration, which occurs in the rat liver after partial hepatectomy, can be abolished by oral administration of 2-acetylaminofluorene. Instead, regeneration is achieved through the proliferation and differentitation of hepatic stem cells. We review morphological characteristics of ehaptic stem cells (oval cells) in partial hepatectomy/2-acetlyaminofluorene rat model, mainly emphasis on routine morphological and ultrastructural features, and immunohistochemical results. Oval cells emerged from the portal areas and became more numerous with time. Oval cells differentiated into hepatocytes and bile ductular epithelial cells on ultrastructural examinations. On the basis of above results, oval cells might have roles of hepatic stem cells and hepato-carcinogenesis.
